The EPSF filter catalogs image files stored in the “Encapsulated PostScript Format”. It accepts only those EPSF files that contain a Macintosh preview. The EPSF filter also supports the DCS (Desktop Color Separation) and ICS (Intelligent Color Separation) extensions of the EPS format. Cumulus will only catalog the image file itself, not the separated files belonging to it. This prevents redundant information in the catalog and cuts down on clutter.
Cumulus also - optionally - supports Helios EtherShare OPI: This OPI system running on an Helios EtherShare file server automatically creates a layout (low resolution) file for each EPSF file (called "high resolution file") from that server as the file is closed. The layout file gets the same name as the high-resolution file with a special file name extension (usually ".lay"). You place the layout file in your QuarkXPress or PageMaker document and later when printing the print spooler (also running on the Helios server) will automatically print the high resolution file instead of the layout file. This way you can save time when placing large images in your layout documents because you only use very small files to do this job. Also you can send the small layout files to another company that returns layout documents to be printed with the high resolution image files (off-site layouting).
You can setup the EPSF Filter to catalog either the layout file or the high-resolution file, thereby avoiding duplication when cataloging a whole folder. To speed up cataloging, however, the layout file is always used to create the thumbnail. The PageMaker and QuarkXPress adapters try to place the layout file with the name extension ".lay" which the OPI server automatically replaces with the high-resolution version at print time.
This filter supports EtherShare OPI version 1.0 up to 1.2.
The EPSF Filter offers support for Adobe ColorCentral OPI as follows:
When cataloging a sample file created by ColorCentral the filter can add the keywords and notes stored in the corresponding high resolution file. You can also define a keyword that is added whenever a ColorCentral sample file is cataloged. This option is useful when you catalog both the high resolution and the sample file of an image and you want to distinguish the corresponding records in the Cumulus database.
The dialog displaying type-specific information for EPSF files looks like this:
PostScript Version: The version of the PostScript language used to describe the image.
EPSF Version: The version of the EPSF specification. If the file is a DCS or ICS file, this is noted after the version number.
Fonts: A list of PostScript fonts used in the image.
Colors: A list of colors defined for the image.
Required Files: If any files have been placed into the EPSF file, these are noted a scrollable list.
OPI System: If the file was created by one of the following OPI systems its name is displayed here: Helios EtherShare OPI, Adobe ColorCentral, 4Sight OPI, LinoPrint, IPT GetThePicture, Nine Bits PrintDesk. If the file contains the OPI comment defined in the original specification by Aldus but is none of the above OPI systems then "Generic" is displayed.
HiRes File: The pathname of the corresponding high resolution file if this file was created by an OPI system (except Helios EtherShare OPI).
The EPSF Filter offers the following setup dialog where you can set options for support for Helios EtherShare OPI and Adobe ColorCentral:
Helios EtherShare OPI aware (default: ON): If this box is checked the filter will only catalog either the layout file or the high resolution files.
Layout file name extension (default: ".lay"): You specify the name extension to identify layout files. You should always specify the same name extension that is used by the Helios EtherShare OPI system. A file in the same folder as the high resolution file that has this name extension will be treated as the layout file for this high resolution file.
Catalog high resolution files only (default: ON): This option allows you to catalog only high resolution files. This is useful to get the information (size, resolution) about those files into the Cumulus catalog. When placing the file into QuarkXPress or PageMaker the corresponding adapter will then place the corresponding layout file instead of this high resolution file.
Catalog layout files only (default: OFF): By choosing this option you can build a catalog of only the layout files. This is useful for off-site layouting (see above).
Adobe ColorCentral aware (default: ON): If this box is checked the filter recognizes sample files created by ColorCentral and applies the functions below.
Include Notes from HiRes File (default: ON): Add the notes found in the corresponding high resolution file if a ColorCentral sample file is cataloged.
Include Keywords from HiRes File (default: ON): Add the keywords found in the corresponding high resolution file if a ColorCentral sample file is cataloged.
Add Keyword for Sample Files (default: ON): Add a special keyword each time a ColorCentral sample file is cataloged. This can be used to distinguish sample files from high resolution files when you catalog both kinds of files for an image. The keyword can be specified in the editable text field below this option. The default keyword is "ColorCentral Sample File".
